Lloyd Irvin Biography
Lloyd Irvin is a 4th-degree black belt and head coach of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) martial arts. He is widely known as the promoter of the sport in the United States through his ‘Lloyd Irvin Martial Arts Academy’ which he successfully launched in 2010. Being a marketing major from Blue State University, Lloyd has effectively utilized his degree to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the martial arts industry.
Many in the past have judged him for being too American for the sport. Fortunately for the BJJ, Lloyd Irvin has managed to keep up with the original standard of the sport and produced one of the best sportsmen in the industry, including the likes of JT Torres, Mike Flower and Ryan Hall. He holds many titles under his belt including Sombo National Champion, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and Judo National Champion.
Background and early life
Lloyd Irvin was born on 17th May 1969 and grew up in a small town of Maryland. Since his childhood, Irvin had a passion for martial arts and one thing that he learned from his grandad was that the best way to earn money is to be your own boss. He was introduced to martial arts at a tender age of 3 years when he started learning Tae Kwando.
As he progressed in life, he started wrestling and moved towards more traditional sports. During his college days, he earned a scholarship to play football and graduated from Bowie State University with a Business Marketing Degree.
During his later years, while watching Royce Gracie perform in a UFC fight he decided to return to BJJ. During his struggle to find the right martial arts coach, Lloyd Irvin was introduced to Mario Yamasaki and Leo Dalla.
Under their mentorship, he mastered the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and went on to receive a black belt in the sport. Being one of the brightest members of the martial arts industry and having a marketing background, Lloyd Irvin launched his first product soon after earning his black belt and was able to earn USD 180k on the very first day.
Martial Arts Career
Lloyd Irvin was lucky because he was introduced to great legends of the sport at an early stage of his martial arts career. His friend Brian Welsh with whom he practiced twice a week introduced him to Leo Dalla and Mario Yamasaki.
Lloyd enrolled in their classes and within a month’s time earned his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt. With strong physical attributes and an observant eye, Lloyd went on to become one of the most successful BJJ fighters in the history of the sport.
In 2001 Lloyd faced a severe neck injury. It took him 13 months of hard work, courage, determination, and healthy lifestyle to recover from the injury and to return back to the sport. In 2008, Lloyd faced another tough moment in his life when two armed men tried to rob his house taking his family hostage. Being a Master Class BJJ professional Lloyd was able to subdue one of the assailants while the other ran away.
Coach and a Mentor
Lloyd had so much passion to train and coach his students that he opened his first school six months after earning his black belt. His school is now famous for generating the best and brightest players in the martial arts industry. Lloyd explained that he puts the same amount of effort on his students as he would in training himself.
In 2010, Lloyd Irvin held a one-day session to help school owners improve their martial arts program. It was a time when nobody cared about the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the United States. Lloyd stood in front of his audience for 14 hours, sharing his knowledge and ideas with the participants.
After the session, people flocked to him to join his coaching group. The learnings from these coaching sessions were so effective that it changed the BJJ school industry forever. The school, which took the course and implemented what they learned, experienced life-changing results at their institutions.
Through his MMA Business Coach certificate, he allowed schools who could not afford to join high tier programs to access his courses online with a lesser charge. Eventually, people who ran martial arts schools as a hobby started turning them into lucrative businesses.
Being one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the sport, Lloyd has been able to build a multi-million-dollar business out of his profession which runs online as well. Through his Martial Arts School – Lloyd Irvin Martial Arts Academy, he has trained and mentored one of biggest names in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Some of his students have gone on to become UFC Champions and BJJ Champions.
Lloyd was the first entrepreneur who introduced the industry to online marketing of the sport. He has introduced coaching programs and home study materials for martial arts that have helped hundreds of schools to introduce world-class BJJ training programs at their campuses.
Using his marketing skills, he launched an internet marketing campaign that generated six figures returns for him in a single day. He attributes his success to his understanding of the internet and direct marketing to reach out to his target market.
